Research Committee

Welcome!

John Freedom, Chair

 * Have you personally received benefit from TFT, EFT, TAT, or other energy psychology methods?
 * Would you like to see more people receive the same benefits you have?
 * Are you interested in research?
 * Would you like to make a real difference in our world?

If you answered yes to one or more of the above questions, then we want you!

Who we are:

We are a group of individuals, much like yourself, who have seen amazing changes and transformations energy psychology methods produce, in both ourselves and our clients. We also see research — strong, unbiased scientific studies documenting what our case studies and personal experiences already tell us — as one powerful way of moving energy psychology out into our world.

What current research is telling us:

Recent research studies are confirming what many of us already know:

  • Steve Wells' 2003 study (Evaluation of a Meridian-Based Intervention, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), for Reducing Specific Phobias of Small Animals) documented the success of EFT in alleviating small rodent phobias. Journal of Clinical Psychology, 59 (9). 943-966.

  • The Andrade-Feinstein study (Preliminary Report of the First Large-Scale Study of Energy Psychology), which tracked more than 29,000 patients from 11 allied treatment centers in South America during a 14-year period. In this study 90 percent of the experimental group (using tapping) improved, and 76 percent were judged to be symptom-free (as opposed to 63 percent and 51 percent of the control group, respectively). Reported in Energy Psychology Interactive: An Integrated Book and CD Program for Learning the Fundamentals of Energy Psychology. Ashland, Oregon: Innersource.

  • Jack Rowe's (2005) study (The Effects of EFT on Long-Term Psychological Symptoms) demonstrated a statistically significant decrease (p < .0005) in all measures of psychological distress from pre-workshop to post-workshop which held up at the six-month follow-up. Published in Counseling & Clinical Psychology Journal; Sept 2005, Vol. 2 Issue 3, p. 104-111.

  • Swingle, Pulos & Swingle's (2004) study with people in a motor vehicle accident (Neurophysiological Indicators of EFT Treatment of Post-traumatic Stress), where all clients reported improvement immediately following treatment. Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine, Vol. 15, 1.

Our goals

Our goals for this coming year are:

  • to support and encourage networking and communication with each other in our ongoing efforts to further this new field of energy psychology;
  • to assist and encourage researchers and students to conduct studies, and to encourage graduate students to write dissertations relating to energy psychology;
  • to have AT LEAST 10 of these studies published in peer-reviewed journals over the next four years;
  • to raise AT LEAST $30,000 to fund research this year (we have $17,000 already!);
  • to communicate what is happening re: research to the EP and EM communities; and
  • to educate the psychological, therapeutic and professional communities, as well as the general public re: the value and efficacy of energy psychology modalities.

Our major goal is to move energy psychology into the mainstream over the next several years. Francine Shapiro has been quite successful in doing this with EMDR; in large part by encouraging studies on EMDR; and we are confident that we can do the same. One way we will do this is by sponsoring and funding studies. We funded the Steve Wells study on "Treating Small Rodent Phobias with EFT," and were succcessful in having it published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology in 2003. We also helped to fund Harvey Baker's study replicating and extending the Wells Study. To dream and vision in a big way, with $100,000 we could get (at least) 10 major studies completed and published, and thereby put energy psychology on the map.

For any of you who are contemplating doing research: we are here to encourage, assist and support YOU. We can offer research design support, help with analysis and writing, and provide (small) grants to fund expenses, etc.

Join our committee!

The benefits of joining the research committee include:

  • being on the cutting edge of energy psychology
  • joining our bi-monthly conference call
  • the ability to shape research in this field for decades to come
  • the opportunity to discuss and network with the finest minds in the field
  • the opportunity to serve and move EP forward in our world.
